New Dermatology Conference Room Opens

UTMB Dermatology now has a new conference room located at McCullough Bldg (5.120). It was fitting that its first official use is scheduled for the 2017 PGY4 dermatology resident presentations of their required dermatology scholarly projects. This conference room is larger than the previous one, and has more seating capacity for students, residents, and faculty (25 chairs).

UTMB MS4 Kristyna Gleghorn Awarded Magna Cum Laude Research Graduation Honors

UTMB MS4 Kristyna Gleghorn (SOM Class of 2017) successfully defended her dermatology research thesis, “Severe Cutaneous Drug Reactions, such as Steven-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, in Pediatric Patients with an Emphasis on Recently Approved Medications,” to her ad hoc thesis committee on Monday, April 24, 2017. Her ad hoc committee was composed of dermatology faculty, Dr. Brent Kelly (thesis advisor), and Drs. Janice Wilson and Richard Wagner. The University Committee awarded Ms. Gleghorn Magna Cum Laude Research Graduation Honors. Congratulations to Ms. Gleghorn on this wonderful research accomplishment!

Dr. Erica Kelly Receives UTMB “Shout Out”

American Board of Dermatology Changes Resident Testing in 2018

On Thursday, April 12, 2018 PGY2 dermatology residents will take a new informational test administered by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) at their residency programs, similar to previous ITE exams. No pass/fail grades will be given.

A practice CORE Exam will be given to PGY3 and PGY4 dermatology residents on Thursday, March 8. It will be similar to previous ITE exams but it may be taken at home or in office via remote proctoring.

UTMB MS4 Presents Dermatology Research Honors Thesis

Please join Kristyna Gleghorn and her UTMB Dermatology Research ad hoc faculty committee for the defense on her thesis, “Severe Cutaneous Drug Reactions, such as Steven-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, in Pediatric Patients with an Emphasis on Recently Approved Medications,” on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11 am in the Dermatology Conference Room, 4.130 McCullough Bldg. Her dermatology faculty advisor on this research was Dr. Brent Kelly, and her ad hoc thesis committee members are Drs. M.K. Peek, J. Wilson, and R. Wagner. Ms. Gleghorn is the immediate past president of the UTMB Dermatology Interest Group (DIG) and the only MS4 in the UTMB SOM Class of 2017 to participate in the dermatology honors research program. It is the 29^th dermatology research thesis presented by a medical student since the UTMB department of Dermatology started participating in this university program in 2001. Following her PGY1 year in California, Dr. Gleghorn will return to UTMB in July 2018 for dermatology residency. UTMB medical students who are interested in learning more about this university sponsored research program for non-PhD students may be especially interested in attending this presentation.

New UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project Approved

Congratulations to UTMB MS1 Michael Ryan for approval of his UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project entitled, “A Disturbing Dichotomy: Dermatologic Depictions in Animated Movies.” His research faculty advisor on this study is Dr. Richard Wagner, the UTMB Dermatology Program Director. His thesis committee is composed of Dr. M.K. Peek and ad hoc dermatology faculty committee members, Dr. B. Kelly and Dr. J. Wilson.

UTMB Dermatologists Publish Innovative Wound Repair

Congratulations to UTMB Mohs Fellow, Dr. H. Malone, UTMB MS4 Drew DeCrescenzo, PGY3 Dermatology Resident Dr. Adrian Subrt, and Dr. Richard Wagner our UTMB Dermatology and Mohs Fellowship Director. 2017 ITE Scores Released to Dermatology Residents

Dermatology residents received their 2017 ITE scores from the February 16, 2017 test this week. UTMB residents were able to score above the 90^th percentile in dermatopathology and basic science this year.

Broadcast and Print Media Interested in UTMB Movie Research

Landmark Research Article Published by UTMB Dermatology

Incoming UTMB Dermatology Resident and current PGY1 Internal Medicine Resident Julie Amthor Croley is the first author on an important original research article entitled, “Dermatologic Findings in Classic Movie Villains: The Face of Evil,” that has been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed dermatology journal, JAMA Dermatology that was published online this month (please see http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/fullarticle/2614259 ). Her coauthors on this research are Drs. Vail Reese (publisher of skinema.com) and Richard Wagner, the UTMB Dermatology Program Director. This project grew out of a research essay that Dr. Croley wrote for Dr. Wagner’s popular UTMB didactic film class (DERU-4007 and DERU-4051) while she was a UTMB MS4. Many of Dr. Wagner’s film class students have published original research related to this class in peer-reviewed medical journals. Congratulations to Dr. Crowley for this amazing professional achievement so early in her dermatology career!

Street Parking Around UTMB

A front page story in the Monday, March 27, 2017 Galveston Daily News (Ketterer S, Galveston to charge for street  parking near UTMB, pages A1 and A4) provided some information about this parking plan change. According to this report, UTMB has returned about 80 street parking spots to the City of Galveston for future parking administration that will begin on June 1, 2017. The City of Galveston will charge $2 per hour for parking.

UTMB Dermatology Publishes Followup Study on Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Congratulations to UTMB co-authors Dr. J. Wilson (UTMB Dermatopathology Fellow), UTMB MS4 Kristyna Gleghorn, and Dr. B. Kelly (Director of UTMB Dermatopathology) for their JAAD article, “Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis: A 15-year retrospective study at a single tertiary care center.” Their article was published in the March 2017 issue of Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. UTMB Fellow Co-authors Case Report on Scabies

Dr. H. Malone is the co-author on a peer-reviewed report about scabies (Misdiagnosed crusted scabies in an AIDS patient leads to hyperinfestation, Cutis 2017;99:202-204). The other co-authors, from the UTMB Department of Internal Medicine, were Drs. Niloofar Yari and Antonio Rivas. This report was submitted to Cutis when Dr. Malone was a UTMB dermatology resident. UTMB SOM and Dermatology Alumnus Elected to ABD BOD

Congratulations to Dr. Scott M. Dinehart, MD, FAAD for his recent election to the American Board of Dermatology Board of Directors. Dr. Dinehart graduated from UTMB and completed dermatology residency at UTMB before taking a Mohs Fellowship at Duke. He is currently in private practice in Little Rock, Arkansas.

UTMB MS4 Co-authors JAAD Article

Congratulations to UTMB MS4 Drew DeCrescenzo for his recent publication, “Rhinophyma graft for repair of the phymatous nasal ala.” It has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Volume 76, Issue 4, April 2017, Page e123. His co-authors on this innovative approach to reconstruction of the phymatous nose were Drs. H. Malone (first author and Mohs Fellow), Adrian Subrt (UTMB PGY3 Dermatology Resident), and Richard Wagner (UTMB Dermatology Residency and Mohs Fellowship Director). Drew participated in the case while on the UTMB Dermatologic Surgery elective, and presented it at the 2017 American Academy of Dermatology Meeting.

UTMB DIG Members Attend AAD in Orlando

During the first weekend of March, UTMB residents and DIG members traveled to Orlando to attend the annual AAD conference. DIG members that attended and/or presented at the annual conference included: Kristyna Gleghorn (MS4), Dung Mac (MS4), Andrew DeCrescenzo (MS4), Tim Allen (MS3), Paige Hoyer (MS3), Tara Akunna (MS3), and Andrea Johnson (MS3). Every students enjoyed the experience and many gained exposure to the various fields of dermatology including Cosmetic, Pediatric, and Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology. In addition, many members enjoyed the opportunity to network with current resident, Program Directors, and other hopeful medical students!

2017 AIM for the CURE Melanoma Walk

This past Saturday, March 11th, the annual AIM for the CURE Melanoma Walk was held on the Galveston Seawall. Volunteers and participants raised $1,615, our most successful yet! Proceeds are donated to help support research, education, and patient/family support. We are very thankful for our dedicated D.I.G. volunteers and participants. Another Successful Suture Workshop

On Thursday, March 9th, Dr. Richard Wagner, Dr. William Tausend (PGY3), and Dr. Lindy Ross (PGY3) helped host a procedural workshop for UTMB students. Students were given a lecture on surgical instruments and techniques frequently used by dermatologists as well as taught how to perform tangential biopsies, punch biopsies, injections and suturing techniques. They were then allowed to practice these skills on tomatoes, marshmallows, and pigs' feet! Thank you to Drs. Wagner, Tausend, and Ross for holding such a great workshop!

Another Successful Bake Sale

On March 8th, 2017, DIG hosted its annual bake sale in the Jamail Student Center to raise money for supplies for the Stay Shady presentations! The bake sale was a huge success, raising $157, more than enough to keep DIG functioning for another year. The quality of the baked goods exceeded all expectations and included home-baked treats from: Keith Wagner (MS2), Tim Allen (MS3), Uloma Ibezim (MS2), Caitlin Otto (MS1), Paige Hoyer (MS3), Tara Akunna (MS3), Caroline Crain (MS1), Dung Mac (MS4), Josh Hays (MS3), Michael Ryan (MS1), and Nisha Soneji (MS2)! We are very appreciative of everyone who bought baked goods or donated for the cause!

24 Hour Workdays Back for PGY1 Residents

Yes, after several years of 16 hour work limits for PGY1 residents, the ACGME has adopted a 24 hour limit starting this July (Tanner L. New rules let rookie doctors work longer. Houston Chronicle, Sunday, March 12, 2017, Page A13). However, the 80 hour workweek limit remains in place.

UTMB Fills All 137 Positions in 2017

UTMB filled all 137 available positions  (100%) of its available residency positions through the NRMP and the San Francisco Match. This includes the four advanced PGY2 dermatology residency positions that begin in July 2018.

2018-2019 Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (Mohs) Fellow

Congratulations to Dr. Josh Hammel, a current PGY2 dermatology resident at the University of Iowa. Due to a San Francisco Match exemption, Dr. Hammel has accepted the UTMB ACGME-accredited Mohs Fellowship for the 2018-2019 academic year. Prior to dermatology residency, Dr. Hammel was an integrated plastic surgery resident in Illinois where he worked with UTMB’s current Mohs fellow, Dr. C. Helen Malone. He also was a dermatology clinical research fellow at Northwestern prior to dermatology residency.

MD Anderson President Resigns

The Houston Chronicle is reporting the resignation of MD Anderson President, Dr. Ron DePinto (http://www.chron.com/houston/article/Ron-DePinho-resigning-MD-Anderson-Cancer-Center-10987005.php ). In a published statement, Dr. DePinto wrote, "As a result of months of self-reflection and deep engagement with the chancellor and our Board of Visitors, it became clear to me that this great and noble institution needs a new president who will inspire greater unity and a sharp operational focus on navigating the tectonic changes in healthcare delivery and economics."

Incoming PGY2 Dermatology Resident Publishes Research Manuscript

Congratulations to Dr. Skyler White, a current UTMB Preliminary PGY1 Internal Medicine resident who will begin PGY2 Dermatology residency at UTMB in July 2017. Dr. White published her manuscript, “Dermatology Depictions in Friends” in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medicine and Movies. Her article is currently available at http://revistas.usal.es/index.php/medicina_y_cine/article/view/15869 . Her co-author on this research was Dr. Richard Wagner, the UTMB Dermatology Program Director.  Dr. White began working on the idea for this manuscript while she was a MS4 UTMB medical student taking Dr. Wagner’s popular film class at UTMB.

How to Make Dermatology More Diverse

It starts with residency selection, according to JAMA Dermatology Viewpoint authors from UCSF (Rethinking How We Select Dermatology Applicants—Turning the Tide, 2017;153:259-260). They make 6 specific suggestions about how to go about achieving greater diversity in dermatology, including removing AOA membership, Step 1 scores, and publication numbers as primary selection criteria. With the 2017 NRMP results release scheduled for next week, dermatologists will be looking at UCSF’s match list to see how successful they were in achieving their diversity goal. However, given the vagaries of the NRMP, a better solution might be to free programs seeking diversity from the NRMP for designated diversity residency positions that could be offered outside of the match to insure specialty diversity aims are met. In addition, the ABD could issue annual diversity awards for dermatology residency programs meeting diversity goals.

Stay Shady visits Crenshaw!

On Thursday, March 2nd, 2017, Keith Wagner (MS2) and Eric Mong (MS2) presented Stay Shady to over 150 elementary and middle school students at Crenshaw Elementary and Middle School! The two helped teach the students about the sun damage and how to protect themselves from the UV radiation. In addition, the students were able to make UV beads that change color when exposed to sunlight! Both the students and faculty enjoyed their time and were grateful for the presentation. DIG would like to thank both the volunteers and Crenshaw for allowing Stay Shady to occur!
