Due to reliable internet connectivity and other factors, the ABD is recommending Pearson VUE Test Centers for dermatology residents taking the 4 CORE exams now needed to take the ABD Certification Examination following residency completion. ABD is also interested if residents encounter any problem with their test experience, and request that these residents contact the ABD directly at 617-910-6400 (Kara Fuller, ext. 4) who is their first-line advocate.

Congratulations to MS4 Renat Ahatov for the acceptance of his UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project, “Analysis of Androgenic Alopecia Treatment Preferences in Dermatologists.” The project will serve to analyze the treatment preferences for the elusive androgenic alopecia in males and females, in dermatologists across the United States via a survey study. His ad hoc thesis committee members are Dr. Bret Howrey (Family Medicine, Director of the UTMB Honors Research Program), and dermatology faculty Drs. Lindy Ross (faculty advisor), Michael Wilkerson, Sharon Raimer, and Richard Wagner.
The July 2021 issue of SKIN provides interesting information about medical student perceptions about dermatology research. The authors conducted a survey of dermatology interest groups and had 57 students participate. Students participating in more than 8 research experiences had greater confidence in their research abilities. Posters, abstracts, and chart reviews were favored. The ABD administers several tests during dermatology residency. During PGY2 it offers the BASIC exam (no passing score) for PGY2 residents and programs to measure knowledge compared to PGY2 residents at other programs. During PGY3 and PGY4 CORE exams are administered in four subject areas (general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, and dermatologic surgery). Residents passing all 4 of these examinations are eligible to take the APPLIED Board Certification Examination. The ABD’s policy regarding testing is:
“A resident’s BASIC Exam and CORE Exam results will not be shared by the ABD with anyone other than the candidate and the program. An individual candidate’s result on the APPLIED Exam will not be shared by the ABD with anyone other than the candidate. The ABD provides programs with a Program Performance Report, summarizing the overall performance of its residents on the APPLIED Exam, in a de-identified manner. Once certified by the ABD, a diplomate’s certification status will be available to the public. BASIC Exam and CORE Exam results are provided to help training programs assess a resident’s development as a dermatologist. Exam results may not to be shared with anyone outside of the clinical competency committee or Program Director without the written consent of the resident.”
On Saturday (5/22), Dr. Anthony Linfante and Dr. Paige Hoyer, along with Renat Ahatov (MS3), put on a dermatology workshop for medical students at St. Vincent's Clinic. The workshop consisted of learning how to prepare for biopsies, perform the biopsies, and general tips on the interview and the physical exam for dermatology patients.

Google is in the process of developing a “dermatology assistant tool” to help answer billions of related searches each year. “The AI can recognise 288 skin conditions but is not designed to be a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment, the firm said.” Planned release date is later this year.

Congratulations to MS3 Bianca Uzoma (SOM 2022) for the acceptance of her UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project, “Photoactivated Rose Bengal in the Presence of Melanin: Cutaneous Wound Healing Outcomes in Skin of Color.” The project will serve to elucidate wound healing disparities seen in different patient populations as well as provide a biochemical understanding of cutaneous wound healing and available new-generation therapies. Her ad hoc thesis committee members are the Chair Drs. Bret Howrey (Family Medicine), and dermatology faculty Michael Wilkerson (faculty advisor), Richard Wagner, and Kathleen Kroger.
As a joint venture between the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement and the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center Department of Dermatology, we are pleased to offer the Diversity Scholar Visiting Medical Student Elective. This elective is seeking applicants who come from an underrepresented-in-medicine background and have demonstrated vision and commitment to improving the health status of diverse patient populations. Students must display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice as it relates to dermatology. We seek to increase diversity and cultural competency in the healthcare workforce and to promote interest in academic medicine.
To ensure greater confidentiality and accessibility for anonymous comments from the UTMB dermatology residents, the suggestion boxes located in the Galveston and League City dermatology clinics have gone electronic using SurveyMonkey. In the December 2020 MSDO match, there were 149 Applicants and 69 programs that offered a total of 84 positions. All positions filled for a 56% match rate.
The first group of dermatology residents (557) required to pass 4 CORE Exams administered by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) in order to meet eligibility to take the Applied ABD Certification Exam (“The Boards”) in July had a successful overall pass rate of 98.7%. Seven residents in this cohort have not passed all of their CORE exams. These 7 have the opportunity to pass the remaining CORE examinations during their 5 year board-eligibility period, and if successful they will be able to take the Applied ABD Certification Exam. CORE exams are given three times each year, in February, July, and November. All 4 UTMB PGY4 dermatology residents passed all of their CORE exams on their first attempt.
In a report by Mark Glassman, data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons detailed overall declines in numbers of cosmetic procedures preformed during 2020 (May 10, 2021, page 60). Hair transplants had the highest overall decline (60%, 24,000 in 2019 and 10,000 in 2020).
