 We’d like to invite you to participate in a voluntary, anonymous research survey evaluating how a novel diagnostic tool, electrical impedance spectroscopy, compares to the use of dermoscopy in the evaluation of pigmented skin lesions. Lack of prior knowledge or experience with either dermoscopy or electrical impedance spectroscopy does not limit you from participating in this study  – in fact, we expect that you likely are not familiar with the latter.

 “Facing Racial Headwinds in the Intense Environment of Medical Education”

Every student who goes to medical school comes in with their own vantage points and unique needs. Universities will have official statements of the best intentions for students but miss critical issues of how human behavior and unconscious bias impact the school environment. Developing and empowering a safe and effective learning space for students is key to an already stressful medical education process. It is also vital that diverse students understand why they chose medicine and battle against self-doubt, questioning their ability to keep up and imposter syndrome; also, knowing racism exists and questioning whether they will handle the pressures of medical school and manage the landscape of racism and microaggressions that they have and expectedly will continually face. Lack of understanding will lead to poor productivity and a complex learning environment that stunts student's growth, interest, and creativity in medicine.

 

This talk intends to increase racial understanding in training, manage risks to non-traditional students, and retain and grow a diverse talent group in preparation for the continual challenges of medicine. Poor understanding of race will cause a lack of empathy and understanding that impairs students of diverse groups and leaves majority culture students unprepared for the growing diverse population.

 

Objectives:

1.         Preparing the diverse student populations for the difficulties they often face in medical education.

2.         To ensure that students keep in mind what is important and staying focused on their goals while in intense educational situations.

3.         How to combat against issues of imposter syndrome and microaggressions that are commonly faced in medical school.

 

This presentation is geared to students, but all members of the UTMB community are invited to participate.

UTMB Medical Student, Resident and Mohs Fellow Publish in Dermatologic Surgery

Congratulations to Kristen Kay and Drs. Paige Hoyer and Vlad Codrea for their interesting case report that was published in the August 2021 issue of Dermatologic Surgery (Anaphylaxis associated with topical application of 5-aminolevulinic acid, Volume 47, pages 1150-1151). Their co-author was the Associate Program Director for the UTMB Fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology, Dr. Aaron Joseph.

Dr. Julie Croley Publishes in August 2021 Dermatologic Surgery

UTMB’s recently completed Mohs Fellow published in the 2021 issue of Dermatologic Surgery (3-color Mohs mapping method to uniquely stain up to 6 speciment, pages 1107-1108), co-authoring with Drs. Aboul-Fettough (UT Houston) and UTMB’s Associate Program Director of the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship, Dr. A. Joseph.

DIG will be holding a suture workshop led by UTMB dermatology chief residents Dr. Paige Hoyer and Dr. Anthony Linfante on Tuesday (8/24) at 4 PM and 5 PM at the dermatology conference room located on 5th floor of McCollough (take a right as you enter room 5.124 and the conference room is down the hall).

This will be only limited to 10 students per session, based on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 20 students will be sent an email with a confirmation.

UC Irvine Dermatology Diversity Visiting Student Scholarship

 The UC Irvine Dermatology Residency Program is pleased to offer a Diversity Visiting Student Scholarship for visiting students in need of financial assistance to attend our Dermatology clerkship. We will offer up to two $2500 scholarships for travel and/or housing-related costs associated with attending the clerkship. Through the application, students should demonstrate how their background and experience help to promote an environment of inclusive excellence in our residency program. See UC Diversity Statement. Recap of the 1st General DIG Meeting 2021-2022

 

DIG was joined tonight by UTMB Dermatology Program Director Dr. Richard Wagner to discuss questions about applying and matching into dermatology. Thank you Dr. Wagner for such an informative meeting! Meeting recap:

Talk with Dr. Wagner:

- Dermatology is an extremely competitive field. 4th year students who match into dermatology often have many publications, research experiences, volunteer activities, superior USMLE Step scores, and belong to the AOA Medical Honor Society. If you don't match the first year, work on getting things published during your intern year, then reapply. Don't give up! It is very possible to match into Dermatology the second or third time around. Clinical fellowship positions are available for residents, often after the completion of intern year. 

- Get involved with research early! Participate in posters and podium presentations at Texas Dermatologic Society meetings held two times yearly. Research opportunities are also available during electives, including Dr. Wagner's unique online dermatology courses and NSRF held at UTMB. 

- Students should continue to volunteer at St. Vincent's Dermatology Night, held the first Thursday of every month. First year students should complete the required orientation as well as the additional COVID adjusted quiz to be eligible to sign up. This is a great opportunity to interact with residents and faculty. 

- Preceptorships in dermatology are available for first year medical students after completion of their first year. The department takes 8 students over the 2 elective periods. Additionally, the summer research program (SRP) is a 6-8 week summer elective that allows students to receive funding for a specific research project. - Consider participating in the Honors Research Program in Dermatology. The official deadline for the Honors Proposal is 12/31 of the student's third year, but extensions may be possible. Projects, to be completed by April of the 4th year, allow students to have honors distinction at graduation and have a 97% match rate into dermatology. 

- The President's Cabinet Award is available for yearly submission every year for students with unique ideas to improve the UTMB and Galveston communities. 

- The UTMB Department of Dermatology has a wide variety of electives, ranging from Clinical Dermatology and Research, to Dermatopathology, Mohs Surgery and online electives such as Dermatology in Film. UTMB is second in the country behind UCSF for the number of medical student electives in dermatology. Some clinical electives are now even offered as 2 week electives. The Acting Internship in dermatology is offered the first few periods of 4th year and fulfills medical student graduation requirements. Additionally, BSHS graduation requirements may be fulfilled with dermatology courses. 

- Most dermatology residency programs are advanced positions. Residents are required to complete a PGY1 preliminary or transitional year prior to starting dermatology residency. There are a few US programs that have categorical dermatology programs.

- Melanoma and Psoriasis Walks as well as the Suture Workshop are TBD. 

- DIG Research Chairs are coordinating a research collaboration with residents for upcoming conference presentations. Priority will be given to students participating in DIG events!

American Board of Dermatology (ABD) Recommends Pearson VUE Test Centers for CORE Exams

Due to reliable internet connectivity and other factors, the ABD is recommending Pearson VUE Test Centers for dermatology residents taking the 4 CORE exams now needed to take the ABD Certification Examination following residency completion. ABD is also interested if residents encounter any problem with their test experience, and request that these residents contact the ABD directly at 617-910-6400 (Kara Fuller, ext. 4) who is their first-line advocate.

MS4 Dermatology Honors Research Project Accepted

Congratulations to MS4 Renat Ahatov for the acceptance of his UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project, “Analysis of Androgenic Alopecia Treatment Preferences in Dermatologists.” The project will serve to analyze the treatment preferences for the elusive androgenic alopecia in males and females, in dermatologists across the United States via a survey study. His ad hoc thesis committee members are Dr. Bret Howrey (Family Medicine, Director of the UTMB Honors Research Program), and dermatology faculty Drs. Lindy Ross (faculty advisor), Michael Wilkerson, Sharon Raimer, and Richard Wagner.
