How to Make Dermatology More Diverse

It starts with residency selection, according to JAMA Dermatology Viewpoint authors from UCSF (Rethinking How We Select Dermatology Applicants—Turning the Tide, 2017;153:259-260). They make 6 specific suggestions about how to go about achieving greater diversity in dermatology, including removing AOA membership, Step 1 scores, and publication numbers as primary selection criteria. With the 2017 NRMP results release scheduled for next week, dermatologists will be looking at UCSF’s match list to see how successful they were in achieving their diversity goal. However, given the vagaries of the NRMP, a better solution might be to free programs seeking diversity from the NRMP for designated diversity residency positions that could be offered outside of the match to insure specialty diversity aims are met. In addition, the ABD could issue annual diversity awards for dermatology residency programs meeting diversity goals.

Stay Shady visits Crenshaw!

On Thursday, March 2nd, 2017, Keith Wagner (MS2) and Eric Mong (MS2) presented Stay Shady to over 150 elementary and middle school students at Crenshaw Elementary and Middle School! In addition, the students were able to make UV beads that change color when exposed to sunlight! Both the students and faculty enjoyed their time and were grateful for the presentation. DIG would like to thank both the volunteers and Crenshaw for allowing Stay Shady to occur!

Advice for Dermatology Clinical Rotators

Current MS3s are beginning to plan their dermatology electives for the upcoming 2017-2018 academic year. During rotations, dermatology applicants often have more interactions with dermatology residents than faculty. What advice do dermatology residents offer applicants? How do rotators make the best impressions over a typical one month long audition? These are their suggestions about appropriate professional behavior while on elective:

-Respect boundaries. Do not go into residents’ offices without an invitation.

-Respect personal space. There is no need to physically get too close to residents or faculty. Do not touch students, staff, residents, fellows, or faculty.

-Certain facial expressions may be interpreted by others as anger. Try to smile more! Remember body language: crossed arms may convey the wrong message.

-Be enthusiastic and enjoy your rotation. Become a valuable team contributor. Take advantage of some of the many academic opportunities that typically arise during the rotation. Interested rotators often have the opportunity to co-author case reports or posters with residents, fellows, and faculty.

5. Away rotations for fourth year medical students interested in dermatology

Current DIG President Kristyna Gleghorn graciously took time out of her interview season to provide advice on how to choose away rotations. Main points included: beginning the VSAS application, getting immunizations now before VSAS applications open, and having your application ready for submission by the first of March since it is important to apply as early as possible (the day applications open) for away rotations. Most students complete 2-3 away rotations, and you may have to apply to more programs (~5-6) in order to make sure you get accepted to 2-3 rotations that will work with your fourth year schedule. Contacting programs directly by email or phone call to express interest in a program can help when applying for aways.

Dermatology Programs in Texas include: UTMB (Galveston, TX), Baylor Scott & White A&M (Temple, TX), Texas Tech (Lubbock, TX), UTHSA (San Antonio, TX), UT Houston, Baylor Houston, Baylor Scott & White (Dallas, TX), UT Austin, and UTSW (Dallas, TX). Current MS4s have also done away rotations out-of-state at locations such as: Univ of South Florida, Vanderbilt, Colorado, Univ of Florida at Gainsville, Oregon Health and Science Center (OHSU), Cook Country (Chicago, IL), Metrohealth Medical Center, and Louisiana State University

PGY2 UTMB Dermatology Residents Dine with Faculty for Free!

The UTMB Graduate Medical Education (GME) has instituted a new dinner meeting program related to their Resident Wellness Initiative that applies to our PGY2 (first year) dermatology residents. Volunteer dermatology faculty  are paired with a PGY2 dermatology resident (significant others are also invited) to dine at GME expense (up to $100). There are many excellent restaurants in the Galveston/League City area to enjoy and a good chance to interact with dermatology faculty on a personal level.

Dr. Ashley Group Certified in Wound Care

Congratulations to Dr. Ashley Group for passing the certification examination administered by the American Board of Wound Medicine and Surgery, a non-ABMS  specialty organization. Dr. Group sees dermatology patients with complicated and chronic wounds at the specialized UTMB Health Wound Care and Hyperbarics Clinic in Dickinson, Texas. UTMB dermatology residents are very fortunate to work with Dr. Group during their PGY2 year because they gain additional expertise in this interesting subspecialty area of dermatology. Not many dermatology residency programs in the United States have a dermatology faculty with wound care certification.
