UTMB Mohs Group Publishes in Cutis

AAD's Good Skin Knowledge Grant

 UTMB MS3 and Vice-President Jane Onyemachi's grant submission on behalf of DIG for AAD's Good Skin Knowledge Grant was accepted. This public health and community initiative will provide $600 for purchasing and prepping supplies for STEM activities to deliver a four-module lesson plan on skin, acne, sun safety, and more for children at Rosenberg Elementary before the end of the year. 

UTMB MS4 Publishes Case Report in SKIN

UTMB MS3 Publishes Dermatology Research Honors Project

Congratulations to UTMB MS3 and DIG President Fareen Momin for the publication of her original research, “Dermatological Findings in Children’s Films” in the May 2023 issue of SKIN, a peer-reviewed dermatology journal. Vail Reese (private practice, San Francisco, CA) and Richard Wagner (Professor Dermatology and UTMB Dermatology Program Director).The article is available online at https://jofskin.org/index.php/skin/article/view/1751/1723 It is the latest UTMB Medial Student Research Honors Program Thesis to be published, a program inaugurated by Dr. Wagner in the UTMB Department of Dermatology for students interested in dermatology research in 2001. Dr. Wagner has an academic interest in how media influences public perceptions about skin diseases, and he offers several courses to UTMB and visiting medical students throughout each academic year, including popular film electives and Selectives (DERU-4007 and DERU-4051), as well as other electives and Selectives in humanities related to skin diseases.

Penn State URiM Virtual Elective

Penn State Health will be hosting a virtual, 1-week, dermatology experience for URiM medical students.  This not-for-credit experience will be held the evenings of August 21-25.^th

Passing Step 1 Now a Requirement for Participation in UTMB Honors Research Program

DIG has learned that passing Step 1 is now a requirement for UTMB medical students to participate in the UTMB Honors Research Program. Since 2001, more than 30 UTMB medical students have successfully completed this program, with many matching into dermatology residency programs. While most students interested in dermatology research entered this program in their MS3 year, a few MS1s participated and completed the program in their MS2 year.

UTMB PGY4 dermatology resident, Dr. Victor Teran presents his poster tomorrow (May 3), in the 4th floor hallway of Jennie Sealy. His poster, “Dermatoscope Hygiene Practices and Sanitation Habits” is being presented at the 8^th Annual GME Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Poster Session. His co-authors were Puja Shah, Kate Zipperer, Filipe Cerqueira, Natalie Williams-Bouyer, and Brandon Goodwin. Dermatology residents, faculty, current student rotators, and DIG members are invited to learn more about ongoing resident and fellow quality improvement projects at UTMB and in the Dermatology Department. The posters should be up by 8 am. Lunch for attendees will be provided between noon and 1 pm in conference room 2.506A-2.506B Jennie Sealy to hear the special guest speaker, Dr. Timothy Daskivich.

Recommendation Letter for VSLO Away Rotations

Medical students should be aware that some VSLO away rotation programs this year are asking for letters of recommendation. Medical students should carefully read the requirements set by programs to give faculty members adequate time to write letters.

 

Faculty should email the letter to UTMB Enrollment Services at enrollment.services@utmb.edu . Please make sure to put the name of the student in the email and that it is a Letter of Recommendation for VSLO. Once received, they will upload it to satisfy the student's requirements and release the application.

DIGA/NPF Psoriatic Disease Curriculum

Dear DIGA Members,    We are excited to share a newly developed Psoriatic Diseases Curriculum from the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) in collaboration with DIGA's Psoriasis Committee. NPF has created a free-to-access informational video which can be accessed here, and will soon also be available through DIGA's psoriasis webpage. The accompanying handouts include notes and key points meant to complement this video.  These materials may be helpful for anyone caring for patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, at all levels of training.  Feel free to let us know if you find these materials helpful, or if you have any questions. UTMB PGY2 Dermatology Resident Publishes Review on Surgical Lip Reconstruction

Congratulations to Dr. Brinda Chellappan, a first year UTMB dermatology resident, for her clinical review article, “Lip Reconstruction After Mohs Surgery: A Guide to Flaps” that was published in the April 2023 issue of Cutis (111:205-209). Her UTMB coauthors are Grace Obanigba, Dr. Paige Hoyer, and Dr. Lindy Ross.

Pros and Cons of Post-match Clinical Dermatology Rotations by MS4s

For the past several years, a new trend in late spring clinical dermatology rotations has developed. Typically MS4s who were unsuccessful  in the March NRMP  dermatology match are taking away dermatology rotations in April and June prior to graduation from their home institutions. in addition, MS3s at schools permitting  early away rotations are  also taking away dermatology rotations during this timeframe. There are pros and cons related to this away rotation strategy:

Pros

1. There usually is greater availability for away dermatology rotations after Match day, until the next academic cycle begins in July with new MS4s competing for away rotations.

2. Some dermatology residency programs are unable to accept away rotators once applicants graduate from medical school and begin residency. 

Cons

1. VSLO deadlines vary, so applicants requesting late spring rotations need to plan accordingly.

2. Visiting MS4s in late spring will not have a chance to work with incoming  PGY2s that begin dermatology residency in July. 

3. It is difficult to substantially improve ERAS reapplications for immediate “rebound” dermatology applications given the early ERAS cycle following graduation from medical school, especially given the clinical duties of the PGY1 year. However, occasional PGY2 openings for dermatology residency positions starting in July of the following year arise due to program expansion/funding or other circumstances, and late rotations by MS4s completing PGY1 requirements may help in obtaining a position.

Henry Ford URiM scholarships Available

Henry Ford has two available URiM scholarships, each $1500, for 4^th year medical students from underrepresented minority groups wishing to rotate in the Summer or Fall of 2023.  Any interested students can email our Dermatology Clerkship Coordinator, Natasha Readous, at nreadou2@hfhs.org to receive an application.  The deadline to apply is May 1st, 2023.
