Skin Cancer Advice, Part 2, Galveston Daily News

Galveston Daily News Correspondent Rick Cousins has published a followup article entitled, “How to self-screen, prevent skin cancer” in the Tuesday, June 7, 2016 issue (pages B3, B6). UTMB Dermatology Chair, Dr. Sharon Raimer offers advice to readers. She recommends twice yearly self-examinations of your own skin for most people with dermatology followup if any concerns arise. However, if a person has had melanoma or has a close relative with that disease, it is worthwhile  to see the expert in skin cancer, a dermatologist for professional evaluation. Sun avoidance, protective clothing, and broad spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 applied at least every two hours while outdoors during the day also play an important role in skin cancer prevention.
