COVID-19 and Increased Dermatology Match Rate at Home Programs

The September 2021 issue of Dermatology Online Journal published an interesting letter that found that dermatology applicants had a higher match rate at their home programs during COVID-19 than in previous years (“The impact of COVID-19 on the dermatology match: an increase in the number of students matching at home programs”), see https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8m77413g

Potential explanations for this observation were limited opportunities for away rotations and the use of virtual interviews that may have favored home applicants.

URM Dermatology Applicants in the COVID-19 Era

Cutis has published an important article in the October 2021 issue: “Underrepresented minority students applying to dermatology residency in the COVID-19 Era: Challenges and considerations (pages 216-217) in their Commentary section. The authors advise in their “Practice Points” that “The implementation of holistic review, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and virtual opportunities might mitigate some of the barriers faced by URM applicants.”
