UTMB DIG Presents Stay Shady to Austin Middle School
The
Dermatology Interest Group (DIG) hosted their first Stay Shady event on
Wednesday, October 24th at Austin Middle School in Galveston.
Second-year medical students Eunice Ko and Elise Weisert delivered an
educational presentation on sun safety and helped Austin Middle School
students make UV-sensitive bead bracelets. Special thanks to Ms. Nancy
Cooley at Austin Middle School for coordinating the event and to DIG
fundraising participants for providing the materials
for the bead bracelets.
Dermatology Procedure and Suture Workshop!
UTMB
DIG had their annual Dermatology Procedure and Suture Workshop on
Monday where participants learned to how to perform common dermatology
procedures. Students learned how to do shave biopsies on tomatoes, punch
biopsies on pigs feet, and how to close excisions and punch biopsies using sutures. The UTMB DIG would like to thank our faculty advisor Dr.
Wagner and chief residents (PGY-4s) Dr. Wolf and Dr. Codrea for
volunteering their time to help teach students. Special
thanks to Michael Ryan (MS3) for organizing the event and bringing
supplies. The event was a great success and students left with an
understanding of some of the common procedures performed in dermatology
clinics.

DIG Fall Bake Sale
The
Dermatology Interest Group had their Halloween-themed bake sale on
Wednesday, October 31st to raise funds for
its Stay Shady Program. Special thanks to medical students Elise
Weisert, Alberto Cantua and Michael Ryan who ran the table as well as
DIG's fundraising chairs Caroline Crain and Catherine Hazen who
coordinated the event. The bake sale would not have been a
success without the delicious contributions provided by Christina Davis,
Alberto Cantua, Nate Giles, Anu Reddy, Nga Nguyen, Alyssa Hansen,
Michael Ryan, Elise Weisert, Caroline Crain and Keith Wagner. DIG would

American Board of Dermatology Adds Additional Subspecialty Certification in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS)
Although details are few, the American Board of
Medical Specialties voted last week to approve a subspecialty
certification board in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS). No test
date for the first certification examination for MDS was
announced, but those wishing to take this examination must meet several
eligibility criteria for certification:
“1. Possess a current, valid, full and unrestricted
license to practice medicine or osteopathy in at least one state or
province within the United States or Canada;
2. Hold primary certification in general dermatology from ABD;
3. Be up to date in Maintenance of Certification (MOC) if certification by ABD is time-limited;
4. Demonstrate experience in the subspecialty by:
successfully completing the ACGME-accredited MSDO fellowship
OR
during an initial 5-year practice pathway eligibility period only, attesting to practicing micrographic surgery;* and
5. Pass the MDS certification examination.”

St. Vincent Health Fair
UTMB
DIG will be hosting a booth at the annual St. Vincent's Health Fair on
Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The health fair is a
community-wide event focused on providing health screening
opportunities,
health resources and health education to the underserved population in
Galveston. Our booth will be focused on sun and skin care, and we will
be providing participants with free samples and skincare education
materials during the fair. Volunteers are needed
to help run the booth for any or all of the time between 9:00am to
12:00pm. Please fill out this

The Dermatology Interest Group would like to thank everyone who came
out to the opening meeting on Monday. Below are the notes from the meeting:
Q&A with Dr. Wagner (UTMB Program Director)
-UTMB Dermatology Residency Program has 4 spots each year and looks to
fill them with high achieving students who have strong research background.
-Faculty are willing to assist students with research and mentoring.
-Honors Research Program is a good opportunity to complete independent
project.
-Many clinical electives are available for students most years.
-1st years can take a 4 week elective between MS1/MS2 in
dermatology.
-Dermatology electives can count for many graduation requirements.
-There are didactive courses offered that can allow ample time for
interviews.
-Opportunities for Conferences: Texas Dermatological Society meetings
(fall and spring) and Annual AAD meeting (spring).
-Avoid prioritizing research at the cost of grades and learning.
Applicants should be able to manage academics, research, and extracurriculars.
What options are available if you don’t match:
-Must have a back-up plan.
-Delay graduation (Super-senior year, master’s degree, more away
rotations).
-Other specialties in the match.
-Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Period (SOAP).
-PGY-1 Year (intern year) + Apply again or Research years.
-Research Fellowships.
-Unmatched dermatology applicants have applications and step scores
much higher than the median for many other fields.

American Board of Dermatology on their first attempt. Congratulations

marks the 7th straight year that all of our dermatology
residents have passed “the boards” and became board certified
dermatologists. One of our new dermatology faculty, Dr. Kathleen Kroger,
and the Mohs fellow, Dr. Josh Hammel also received notification that
they passed the examination. Congratulations all!

Tattoos Costly to Remove by Laser!
According to the Wall Street Journal Saturday,
September 1-2, 2018, (page A2) tattoo removal costs $49 to $300 dollars
per square inch and usually requires between 3 and 12 laser treatments.
Removing a 3 x 5 inch tattoo that needs 8 laser
treatments costs between $5880 and $36,000.

UTMB Planning Ahead for House Staff Orientation in June 2019
The UTMB GME has released dates for new house
staff orientation for 2019. This will apply to all incoming PGY1
residents and PGY2 dermatology residents who did not take their PGY1 at
UTMB. UTMB GME plans new house staff orientation on June 20th and 21st. Epic training will follow on June 24th through June 26th, unless it is all completed on June 25th.

National Psoriasis Foundation Walk
Want to make a difference? UTMB DIG will be participating in the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF)'s Houston Walk on Saturday, 9/22/18!
Since 2007, the
NPF has raised over $10 million to help find a cure for psoriasis. Help
us raise awareness and have fun while giving back. We would love for
members to either walk with our UTMB DIG team or volunteer to set
up/break down the event & health fair for our psoriatic
"psuperheros"! Our team page can be found here.

UTMB MS4 Awarded Dermatology Research Graduation Honors
Congratulations
to UTMB MS4 Keith Wagner for the successful defense of his thesis,
“Skin Disease Hoaxes on the Internet: An Evaluation on Their Scope and
Potential
Impact on Dermatology.” His ad hoc honors thesis committee Drs. MK Peek,
Janice Wilson (faculty mentor), Sharon Raimer, and Brent Kelly award
him Magna Cum Laude graduation research honors. There were a total of 2
UTMB MS4s who completed Dermatology Honors
Research Programs in the SOM Class of 2019. 32 UTMB UTMB medical
students have now completed this program in dermatology research since
the Department of Dermatology began participation in 2001. 26 of them
are currently in dermatology residency programs or
practicing dermatology, 1 is currently in a dermatology clinical
fellowship, and 3 are still medical students at UTMB.

Disease Specific Support Groups
The internet has facilitated disease specific
support groups for patients and their families. One of the earliest ones
for skin diseases was N.O.A.H (National Organization for Albinism and
Hypopigmentation: https://www.albinism.org/ ).
The UTMB DIG, through its association with DIGA,
has learned about an additional organization for those impacted by
vitiligo ( see https://www.globalvitiligofoundation.org/support-groups ). Texas currently has vitiligo support groups in Dallas and in Houston according to this website.
UTMB Dermatology Faculty Invited Speaker at 2018 Houston Dermatological Society
Dr.
Janice Wilson, UTMB Assistant Professor of Dermatology and
Dermatopathology, is presenting a lecture for the Houston Dermatological Society titled, “Dermoscopy of
Pigmented Acral Lesions” along with Dr. Kelly Nelson (MD Anderson Cancer
Center) at 7 on September 10, 2018.

UTMB Dermatology Honors Program Thesis Presentation Scheduled
Please
join UTMB MS4 Keith Wagner for his UTMB Dermatology Honors Thesis
titled, “Skin Disease Hoaxes on the Internet: An Evaluation on Their
Scope and Potential Impact on Dermatology,” on Friday, August 17th at 8 am in the small 5th floor dermatology conference room (McCullough Bldg., Room 5.120F).
His honors committee includes, Drs. MK Peek, Janice Wilson (faculty
mentor), Sharon Raimer, and Brent Kelly. It is a good opportunity for
1st through 3rd year UTMB medical students to learn more about the UTMB
Dermatology Honors Research Program.
