New Peds-focused Dermatology Residency Track at Penn: 4 years program, yr 1 at CHOP, yr 2-4 at Penn

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Section of Dermatology and Penn Medicine’s Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania would like to announce a newly combined PGY 1-4 Pediatric Dermatology focused residency track.

This new track includes a PGY 1 pediatric internship year at CHOP, and PGY 2-4 dermatology residency position (with dedicated time to pediatric dermatology training throughout the 3-year dermatology residency, including development of a pediatric dermatology outpatient continuity clinic starting as early as PGY 1 year).

Strong candidates who are committed to a career in pediatric dermatology are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity, which requires a combined match. The preliminary pediatric year and dermatology residency years will involve a pediatric dermatology continuity clinic throughout. Graduates of the program will be expected to board certify in General Dermatology. We anticipate most graduates will likely plan to subsequently complete a 1-year Pediatric Dermatology fellowship post residency. 

Interviews will occur over a 1-day schedule and will include coordinated interviews with both the CHOP Pediatric Residency Directors and Penn Dermatology Faculty.

PGY4 Andrew Armenta, MD Recognized for 2023 Excellent Dermatology Research by Dermatology Faculty

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Armenta for his recognition by the UTMB Dermatology Faculty for Excellent Dermatology Research Performed during residency. His scholarly project was “Review of Tumor margins for staged surgical excisions with permanent section en face processing at UTMB for lentigo maligna, melanoma in situ, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. His co-investigators on this work were MS3 Michael Adkison, Dr. Frank Winsett (2022-2023 UTMB Mohs Fellow), and faculty mentor, Dr. Richard Wagner. Faculty consider PGY4 resident overall academic research productivity during residency, research quality, research award(s) and departmental presentation of the required scholarly project when selecting the awardee each year.

UTMB MS1 Presents at 2023 MSSRP

Congratulations to UTMB MS1 Madelyn Schmidt for presenting her Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) poster on Friday, June 16, 2023. Her research, “ Life Saving Sun Protection for Lifeguards” was an IRB approved longitudinal study that will extend through the summer for Galveston lifeguards. Her dermatology faculty advisor, Dr. Richard Wagner is Professor Dermatology and the UTMB Dermatology Program Director.

2023 Western Regional Conference - Call for Committee Chairs!

Dear DIGA Members, 

We are planning the first ever DIGA Western Regional Conference. This year the event will be hosted in collaboration with the OHSU DIG in Portland, OR on November 10-11, 2023. 

We are looking for chair committee members to help plan the event!

The following positions are available for application: 

Philanthropic Support Chair: This person is responsible for coordinating support, donations, and funding for the event day. This will include contacting national and local businesses for sponsorship and support of the event. 

Local Chair*: This person is responsible for the details associated with the event day. They will define and execute the registration process, ensuring a smooth, organized experience for attendees arriving at the event. They also interview, evaluate and select venues and vendors who will manage the technical requirements, food and beverages, security, room set-up, entertainment, decor, and more.

Sessions Chair: This person will coordinate the session activities on the day of, both in the large group and small group settings. This will require collaborating with the Program Chair to ensure needs are met and the agenda is upheld. 

Publicity Chair: The person is responsible for ensuring that the event promotions are accurate, up-to-date, on-brand, and well-executed. They will work to establish a communications and promotions strategy to spread awareness of the conference to authors and attendees. 

Finance Chair: A conference organizing committee must adhere to a budget in order to execute a successful event. The Finance Chair is responsible for setting the event budget, and allocate areas of the budget to facilitate the resources needed by the other committee chairs.

Program Chair: This person will coordinate the call for papers and communicate the technical requirements requested by the presenters, ensuring that these needs are met and working properly. They also set the agenda for the conference, working closely with the Session Chair to coordinate when each presenter is speaking, and take charge of the peer-review process.

Loss of Elizabeth (“Betty”) Head

Elizabeth (“Betty”) Head

The UTMB Department of Dermatology was deeply saddened to learn about the recent loss of Betty Head. Betty was an accomplished mycologist who was well known to generations of UTMB medical students, dermatology residents, and dermatology faculty. She had a vast knowledge about the history of the UTMB Department of Dermatology that dated from the 1940s  when she was first employed at UTMB as a teenager. She was also well recognized in the Galveston community, particularly for her leadership in the International Oleander Society.

AAD's Good Skin Knowledge Grant

 UTMB MS3 and Vice-President Jane Onyemachi's grant submission on behalf of DIG for AAD's Good Skin Knowledge Grant was accepted. This public health and community initiative will provide $600 for purchasing and prepping supplies for STEM activities to deliver a four-module lesson plan on skin, acne, sun safety, and more for children at Rosenberg Elementary before the end of the year.

Dr. Wagner has an academic interest in how media influences public perceptions about skin diseases, and he offers several courses to UTMB and visiting medical students throughout each academic year, including popular film electives and Selectives (DERU-4007 and DERU-4051), as well as other electives and Selectives in humanities related to skin diseases.

Penn State URiM Virtual Elective

Penn State Health will be hosting a virtual, 1-week, dermatology experience for URiM medical students.  This not-for-credit experience will be held the evenings of August 21-25.^th

Passing Step 1 Now a Requirement for Participation in UTMB Honors Research Program

DIG has learned that passing Step 1 is now a requirement for UTMB medical students to participate in the UTMB Honors Research Program. Since 2001, more than 30 UTMB medical students have successfully completed this program, with many matching into dermatology residency programs. While most students interested in dermatology research entered this program in their MS3 year, a few MS1s participated and completed the program in their MS2 year.

UTMB PGY4 dermatology resident, Dr. Victor Teran presents his poster tomorrow (May 3), in the 4th floor hallway of Jennie Sealy. His poster, “Dermatoscope Hygiene Practices and Sanitation Habits” is being presented at the 8^th Annual GME Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Poster Session. His co-authors were Puja Shah, Kate Zipperer, Filipe Cerqueira, Natalie Williams-Bouyer, and Brandon Goodwin. Dermatology residents, faculty, current student rotators, and DIG members are invited to learn more about ongoing resident and fellow quality improvement projects at UTMB and in the Dermatology Department. Recommendation Letter for VSLO Away Rotations

Medical students should be aware that some VSLO away rotation programs this year are asking for letters of recommendation. Medical students should carefully read the requirements set by programs to give faculty members adequate time to write letters.

 

Faculty should email the letter to UTMB Enrollment Services at enrollment.services@utmb.edu . Please make sure to put the name of the student in the email and that it is a Letter of Recommendation for VSLO. Once received, they will upload it to satisfy the student's requirements and release the application.
