Each year UTMB Departments can nominate one resident for consideration for the annual institutional  “Outstanding Overall Resident” Award. This year the UTMB Department of Dermatology nominee was Dr. Paige Hoyer. Congratulations Dr. Hoyer!

UTMB and Baylor Mohs Collaborate on Mohs Reconstruction Article

  

Congratulations to former UTMB Mohs Fellow Dr. Julie Croley for her first author “Reconstructive Conundrum,”  Revision Repair of a Collapsed External Nasal Valve that was recently published in Dermatologic Surgery (2022 Mar 31 doi: 10.1097/DSS.0000000000003221. Online ahead of print, PMID: 35438658). Her co-authors were Drs. C. Helen Malone (former UTMB Mohs Fellow and Baylor College of Medicine, Richard F. Wagner, Jr., UTMB Professor Dermatology and Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship Director, and Gilly S. Munavalli, Baylor College of Medicine).

UTMB Mohs Fellow Nominated for “Outstanding Overall Fellow” Award

 Congratulations to Dr. Kristyna Gleghorn (Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellow) for her nomination for UTMB’s institutional annual “Outstanding Overall Fellow” Award. She expects to complete fellowship training in June 2022.

TDS Announcement for Spring 2022 Meeting

 Due to an overwhelming number of resident submissions this spring, medical students and fellows will not be able to participate in the podium presentations at the spring TDS meeting. In addition, TDS will not able to have any medical students or fellows participate on-site with a printed poster due to space limitations. However, medical students and fellows will still be able to present their work to conference participants via a printed booklet. 

DIG 2022 Match Panel Recap

 We had a very successful DIG Match Panel as many of our members attended this online webinar. 

There were three main categories for questions. The following is a general summary of the advice our matched seniors provided.

 

Research (How did you get involved)?

-Make sure to reach out to faculty and resident, upperclassmen can help too

-With the annual TDS spring and fall conference, it would be appropriate to ask for research opportunities around that time period

 

4th year scheduling (How should I modify my schedule)?

-Interviews are held normally from December-January, make sure you leave that time free in order to attend interviews

-When scheduling away rotations, coordinate with your classmates to make sure your schedules don’t overlap

 

The Match process (What is it like)?

-The Match process is difficult, but you can do it!

-Make sure to coordinate your dermatology program as well as your prelim/transitional year so you can match into both!

-Networking and having mentors will help and make the process much more manageable

UTMB Dermatology Announces Research Fellowship

 The UTMB Department of Dermatology has announced a 1-year paid, unaccredited, dermatology research fellowship to start on July 1, 2022. Eligible applicants must have completed their PGY1 year and have an unrestricted Texas Medical License by the time the fellowship begins. UTMB MS3 Brenda Carrillo Presents at Regional Conference

UTMB MS3 Andrea Francis Awarded Magna Cum Laude Dermatology Research Honors

 UTMB MS3 Andrea Francis presented her Dermatology Research Honors Project Thesis presentation (“Hats for the Homeless”) on March 11, 2022 and was awarded Magna Cum Laude dermatology research graduation honors by her ad hoc Honors Committee. Her faculty advisor was Dr. Richard Wagner and her thesis committee members were Drs. Brent Kelly, Sharon Raimer, and Bret Howry. It was the second dermatology research honors project presented virtually this academic year. It was also the first dermatology honors project designed as a Quality Improvement Project (QIP). Congratulations for achieving this distinguished academic honor at UTMB!

Introducing the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine

 The University of Texas Medical Branch is naming its School of Medicine the John Sealy School of Medicine in honor of the 19^th century Texas entrepreneur and philanthropist John Sealy and the foundation that was established decades after his death to continue his legacy of support. Over the past 100 years, The Sealy & Smith Foundation has contributed more than $1 billion to UTMB, one of the largest cumulative contributions in history to an American institution.

UTMB PGY4 Dermatology Residents Drs. Paige Hoyer and Anthony Linfante Receive Awards from St. Vincent’s

Please join the UTMB DIG and the UTMB Department of Dermatology in congratulating PGY4 dermatology residents Drs. Paige Hoyer and Anthony Linfante for their recent recognition for their volunteerism by St. Vincent’s. Dr. Hoyer received the Robert E. Beach Award and the Departmental Award for Dermatology and Dr. Linfante received the President’s Service Award and the Departmental Award for Dermatology.

 

Undercount of UTMB Medical Student Matches in JAAD Research Letter

 Medical students at UTMB were surprised that UTMB was not listed in the top 20 ranked US  Programs in regard to successful matches into dermatology residency (JAAD 2022; 86:490-492). Our students have exposure to several factors that favor applicants in the competitive dermatology residency match each year: an active dermatology residency program with multiple electives starting in the first year of medical school, a dedicated preclinical dermatology course (dermatology is covered as part of DHM in the second year), ample research opportunities for medical students to collaborate with dermatology residents and faculty or to conduct independent dermatology research as a Principle Investigator (PI) by engaging in the UTMB Dermatology Honors Research Program, encouragement to  present research at regional (Texas Dermatological Society spring and fall meetings), national meetings such as the annual meeting to the American Academy of Dermatology), other national dermatology societies, and the National Student Research Forum dermatology section), 4 departmental graduation awards each year, and numerous volunteer opportunities through our active Dermatology Interest Group (DIG) and St. Vincent’s  monthly dermatology clinic.  Assuming that the other school reports in this article were accurate, UTMB would have ranked tied at number 3 with the University of Michigan.

 

Researching the archives of the UTMB DIG Blog, it was documented that there have been 24 successful dermatology matches for UTMB medical students during the 4 year period reported (2017-2020). UTMB medical students have matched at 15 different dermatology programs during this period:

Three Texas Medical Schools in Top 20 for Dermatology Residency Matches

 The February 2022 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published an interesting research letter pertaining to the top 20 US medical schools that place most applicants into dermatology residencies from 2017 to 2020 (“Medical schools as gatekeepers: A survey and analysis of factors predicting dermatology residency placement” (JAAD 2022;86:490-292). The three Texas Medical Schools listed in the top 20 were Baylor (number 1 with 27 matched students), UT Southwestern (number 17 with 16 matched students), and Texas A&M (tied at number 20 with 15 students). Medical schools affiliated with a dermatology residency program, higher US News Medical School Research Ranking, and an available clerkship dermatology rotation significantly improved the match rate for applicants.

DIG Spring Bake Sale 3/16/2022

The Dermatology Interest group will be hosting a bake sale fundraiser in the Health Education Center (HEC) hallway at 12:00 PM as well as handing out fliers about sun safety. 

To prevent the spread of COVID-19: We will have hand sanitizer available. All the food will be pre-packaged and be handed out using gloves. Only 1 potential buyer will be allowed at the table at one time for social distancing purposes. Masks will be worn at all times.

 The Houston Vitiligo Awareness Movement will be hosting a 5k on April 9th, 2022 to celebrate their 5 year anniversary as an organization. Houston Vitiligo Awareness Movement is here to Support, Embrace, Educate individuals who are affected by this autoimmune skin disorder. DIG members are welcome and encouraged to attend and volunteer. 63rd Annual National Student Research Forum

 Yes, UTMB is still planning to host the 2022 NSRF this year. The determination if it will be virtual should be made soon. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase research in dermatology. Continued Accreditation for UTMB Dermatology Fellowship Programs

The ACGME Dermatology Review Committee has notified the UTMB Department of Dermatology that the Dermatopathology Fellowship and the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship have received continued accreditation.

UTMB Dermatology Approved for 18 Residency Positions

 

Congratulations to the UTMB Department of Dermatology for their “Continued Accreditation” by the ACGME for their dermatology residency and for permission by the ACMGE to expand their residency program from 15 to 18 positions (6 residents per class). For the upcoming NRMP, there will be 1 “Physician Only” position (1714080R1) that will begin in July 2022 and 6 “Advanced” positions (1714080A0) that will commence in July 2023.
