DIG Presents Let's Talk Skin of Color

UTMB Dermatology Interest Group is excited to announce our first series of webinars - Let's Talk Skin of Color - to discuss skin of color and diversity in dermatology. We will be covering topics such as racial disparities in dermatology, dermatologic disease manifestations in different skin types and the importance of diversity within the field. DIG was joined tonight by UTMB Dermatology Program Director Dr. Richard Wagner to discuss questions about applying and matching into dermatology. Thank you Dr. Wagner for such an informative meeting! Meeting recap:

Talk with Dr. Wagner:

- Dermatology is an extremely competitive field. 4th year students who match into dermatology often have many publications, research experiences, volunteer activities, superior USMLE Step 1 scores, and belong to the AOA Medical Honor Society. If you don't match the first year, work on getting things published during your intern year, then reapply. Don't give up! It is very possible to match into Dermatology the second or third time around. Clinical fellowship positions are available for residents, often after the completion of intern year. 

- Get involved with research early! Participate in posters and podium presentations at Texas Dermatologic Society meetings held two times yearly. Research opportunities are also available during electives, including Dr. Wagner's unique online dermatology courses. 

- Students should continue to volunteer at St. Vincent's Dermatology Night, held the first Thursday of every month. First year students should complete the required orientation as well as the additional COVID adjusted quiz to be eligible to sign up. This is a great opportunity to interact with residents and faculty. 

- Preceptorships in dermatology are available for first year medical students after completion of their first year. The department takes 8 students over the 2 elective periods. Additionally, the summer research program (SRP) is a 6-8 week summer elective that allows students to receive funding for a specific research project. - Consider participating in the Honors Research Program in Dermatology. The official deadline for the Honors Proposal is 12/31 of the student's third year, but extensions may be possible. Projects, to be completed by April of the 4th year, allow students to have honors distinction at graduation and have a 97% match rate into dermatology. 

- The President's Cabinet Award is available for yearly submission every year for students with unique ideas to improve the UTMB and Galveston communities. 

- The UTMB Department of Dermatology has a wide variety of electives, ranging from Clinical Dermatology and Research, to Dermatopathology, Mohs Surgery and online electives such as Dermatology in Film. UTMB is second in the country behind UCSF for the number of medical student electives in dermatology. Some clinical electives are now even offered as 2 week electives. The Acting Internship in dermatology is offered the first few periods of 4th year and fulfills medical student graduation requirements. Additionally, BSHS graduation requirements may be fulfilled with dermatology courses. 

- Most dermatology residency programs are advanced positions. Residents are required to complete a PGY1 preliminary or transitional year prior to starting dermatology residency. There are a few US programs that have categorical dermatology programs.

- DIG Vice President Michal Phan has put together a mentorship program for upper and lower level medical students interested in matching into dermatology. A form will be released soon for interested students. 

- Melanoma and Psoriasis Walks as well as the Suture Workshop are TBD. 

- DIG Research Chair Renat Ahatov is coordinating a research collaboration with residents for upcoming conference presentations. Priority will be given to students participating in DIG events!

UTMB to Begin Testing Students for COVID-19

Starting next week, Student Health will randomly test 100 students on clinical rotations to monitor COVID-19 in our student community. Selected students will receive an email with instructions. Testing is free, and test results are private.

 

The September 8, 2020 announcement also offered the following advice to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

 

“Below are a few of the things you can do to help prevent a spread on our campus:

 

• Daily Attestation – All students, faculty, and staff are asked to attest daily that you do NOT have any COVID-19 symptoms.  This can be done at one of the attestation stations located throughout campus, through an online form, or through the UTMBSafe App.

• Mask Requirements - All faculty, staff, and students must always wear a mask while in all public spaces, including classrooms, labs, study areas, lobby areas, hallways, copy rooms, restrooms, and elevators.  Students may bring their own personal mask from home.  Students may also obtain a disposable mask through their Student Affairs Dean’s Office.

• Distancing – Remember to remain at least 6 feet apart, even when masked.

• Handwashing – Remember to wash your hands often, and regularly use hand sanitizer stations provided across campus.

 

Finally, if you have an exposure to someone with COVID-19 or develop symptoms of illness, please do not come to campus; call Student Health immediately to discuss your situation.

Second Year UTMB Medical Student Receives Award from President’s Cabinet

Congratulations to UTMB MS2 Andrea Francis for her newly awarded proposal from the President’s Cabinet, “Hats for the Homeless.” The award will fund the purchase of 100 hats to provide needed sun protection for Galveston homeless, and will be distributed through Galveston Street Ministries. DIG members interested in helping distribute the hats and educate recipients about sun protection strategies are welcome to participate. Ms. Francis’ faculty advisor on her proposal was Dr. Richard Wagner, UTMB Professor Dermatology.

UTMB Dermatology Publishes About Teledermatology During COVID-19

Congratulations to a trio of UTMB authors on their current publication about the use of teledermatology services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their article, “Utilization of Telehealth Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” was published in the 2020 August issue of Cutis (106:70-71). Dermatology Online Journal (DOJ), a peer-reviewed and PMID indexed dermatology journal, is now charging authors publication fees for accepted articles:

Dermatology Shelf Exam Suggested for Medical Students

Virtual Dermatology Experience at University of New Mexico

University of New Mexico Dermatology will be hosting virtual dermatology experiences. This experience is problem-oriented in approach and emphasizes the diagnosis and treatment of the most common skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Students accepted to participate will acquire some proficiency in the rapid diagnosis and basic treatment of the most important diseases of the skin. Students are expected to actively participate during the sessions. 

Students are expected to attend a one-hour cases session with a Dermatology faculty member at 10 AM MST each Monday to Friday. Topics will cover: general and complex medical dermatology, cutaneous oncology, and pediatric dermatology. Each case session incorporates 10 minutes of lecture and 50 minutes of cases. On the last day of the session, students will give a 5-minute presentation on a topic of their choice.

Dr. Adam Nguyen Receives Prestigious Thayer Teaching Award

Congratulations to Dr. Adam Nguyen, a recent completing PGY4 UTMB dermatology resident for receiving the Thayer Award for Excellence in Teaching from the John P. UTMB PGY4 Publishes in Dermatologic Surgery

Congratulations to Dr. Kristyna Gleghorn and her coauthors for their recent article, “Foreign Body Reaction to Hydrophilic Polymer Following Mohs Micrographic Surgery.” It appeared online ahead of print in Dermatologic Surgery (June 2020) PMID:  32604230  DOI:  10.1097/DSS.0000000000002510  

Her coauthors were Drs. Vlad Codrea (completing Mohs fellow for the 2019-2020 academic year), Assistant Professor of Dermatology Brandon Goodwin, and the Mohs fellowship director, Dr. Richard Wagner.
