Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology Diversity Clerkship Award

The Department of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is proud to award up to five (5) diversity clerkship awards per academic year to medical students who are considered underrepresented in dermatology.  This award will provide financial support to help students gain exposure to dermatology and to the department.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Eligibility Criteria

· Must be a 3rd or 4th underrepresented medical student (URM) at an accredited medical school in the United States or territories with an interest in completing a residency in dermatology

· Must submit completed application for the rotation

Award Details

The department will award $1500 to up to five medical students to help offset the cost of completing a 4-week rotation through the dermatology department. Preference is given to those noting a financial hardship, for whom completing an away rotation would otherwise be difficult.

While applications are accepted on a rolling basis, applicants are encouraged to apply for the award 3-4 months before their anticipated rotation date.

Awarded applicants must also submit a separate application to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Please direct interested students to contact Shanika Bennett at sbenne17@jhmi.edu for additional information.

Study on medical students’ interest in dermatology

We are conducting a brief study to better understand medical students’ growing interest in the field of dermatology. We aim to characterize students’ perception of the field and identify the factors that influence a student’s desire to pursue a clinical elective and/or career in dermatology.

Survey Link: www.tinyurl.com/derminterest

All results of the survey will be provided to the APD. The results may also be presented at APD-sponsored forums upon request. This survey has been deemed exempt by the University of Michigan IRB (HUM00215676).

This study is being conducted by Drs. Frank Wang and Thomas Hester, Department of Dermatology, University of Michigan. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the Administrative Contact of this study, Reinie Thomas MS3 at
