Allopathic Applicant Research for Matched Dermatology Residents
Don’t miss the article, “Trends of Research Output of Allopathic Medical Students Matching into Dermatology, 2007-2018” published in the August 2021 issue of JAMA Dermatology (157:983-987). The bottom line was that matched applicants had more peer-reviewed indexed publications over this timeframe (1.6 to 4.7) and that publication in lower-impact factor dermatology journals was increasing at a higher rate than high-impact factor dermatology journals. However, compared to NRMP self-reported research items, indexed publications have remained stable from 2007 to 2018.
Should Dermatology Applicants be Limited to 20 Programs?
Authors from the University of Utah present their case for limiting dermatology applications to 20 per applicant. Although this plan has not been implemented, this year the majority of dermatology programs are participating in a supplemental application process that includes “preference signaling.” Nonetheless, medical students planning to apply to dermatology programs in the future may be interested in this article:” Limiting Residency Applications to Dermatology Benefits Nearly Everyone,” J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2021;14(7)30-32. The journal may even be interested in timely correspondence related to this proposal.
UTMB Dermatology Honors Research Published in September 2021 JAAD
Congratulations to Dr. Keith Wagner, a current PGY3 UTMB dermatology resident, for his recent print publication “Online skin disease hoaxes: Widespread and credible to viewers” in the September 2021 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (J Am Acad Dermatol. 2021 Sep;85(3):731-733. doi: 10.1016/j.jaad.2019.06.036. Epub 2019 Jun 22). This research was the outcome of his UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Project that was completed in 2019. His JAAD coauthors are Drs. J. Croley (former UTMB dermatology resident and Mohs fellow) and dermatology faculty, Assistant Professor Dr. J. Wilson. Dr. Wilson was the faculty mentor on this student research. Drs. Wagner, Crowley, and Wilson, along with Dr. Yuki Yamada (Japan) are contributors to the website skinhoax.com
