Duke Consulting Dermatology Professor Dr. Zoe Draelos wrote an interesting editorial about Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) in the June 2016 issue of Dermatology Times (“Superior pay for non-performance model threatens dermatology, society,” page 10). According to Dr. Draelos, ACO patients could encounter primary care providers or dermatologists who might advise patients that their skin problem is so minor that it does not require treatment. This approach ultimate improves ACO financial performance by controlling costs, since no care is less expensive than care. She cautions, “In a society where people are paid more for doing less, you simply get less. Superior pay for non-performance will implode dermatology, medicine in general, and society.” Thank you Dr. Draelos and Dermatology Times for providing readers with such valuable information.
