Recap of the National Psoriasis Foundation’s (NPF) “Starlight Soiree” event at the Houston Zoo

 On Saturday, April 6th, 2024, UTMB DIG volunteers helped with set up/cleanup and participated in this year's National Psoriasis Foundation’s (NPF) “Starlight Soiree” event at the Houston Zoo. Volunteers arrived around 2 pm to assist in setting up goodie bags. Once the event began, volunteers aided with check-in and played an integral role in the fundraising drive and auction for the NPF gala. Attendees were inspired by a talk from an individual living with psoriatic disease. Following the main presentation, volunteers assisted with check-out.

Special thanks to Carol Osterhaus, the regional development manager for the NPF’s South Central branch, for collaborating closely with our Psoriasis Walk Co-Chairs Shayan Ravanassa and Sebastian Certuche in planning this event. Ms. Osterhaus has expressed interest in continuing to work with UTMB DIG on future events. Additionally, special thanks are extended to the volunteers from UTMB and other schools who contributed to the success of the event!

UTMB Dermatology Publishes First Newsletter

Congratulations to Dr. Elise Weisert (UTMB PGY3 dermatology resident, current  Dermatology Chief Resident for Wellness, and former UTMB DIG President and DIG Blog Editor) and Michell Karn for their successful launch of the inaugural Spring 2024 issue of UTMB Dermatology News (“The Latest and Greatest From the Oldest Dermatology Program in Texas”).

UTMB Dermatology held its first Grand Rounds in League City at UTMB Health Dermatology, Town Center on Friday, April 5, 2024.

UTMB MS1 presents at 13th World Congress for Hair Research

Congrats to Inchara Raj (MS1) who presented her poster, "Acne, Alopecia, and Seborrhea: The Dermatological Side Effects of Contraception Methods and What the Consumer Should be Aware of" at the 13^th World Congress for Hair Research, an international conference for experts in hair loss and other hair disorders, in Dallas TX. Her co-authors on the project were Drs. Maria Hordinsky, MD and Dr. Meredith Wise, MD.

Mohs Fellow to Present at 2024 UTMB Annual GME Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Poster Session

On Wednesday May 15, 2024 at 1 pm on Jeanie Sealy 4th floor, Dr. Andrew Armenta, the 2023-2024 UTMB Mohs fellow, will present his poster, “Review of Tumor Margins for Lentigo Maligna with Staged Surgical Excision and Permanent Section en face Processing” (Poster 2). DIG members are invited to attend. Dr. Armenta’s coauthors are UTMB MS3 Michael Adkison and UTMB Dermatology Mohs faculty, Drs. Frank Winsett and Richard Wagner.

UTMB MS2 Publishes Sunburn Research

Congratulations to UTMB MS2 Madelyn Schmidt and her coauthors Nina Martin, Diana Bonilla, Melissa Marchan, Sylvia Jimenez, and Dr. Richard Wagner for the publication of her MS1 Summer Research Program Project in the Online Journal of Community and Patient-Centered Dermatology (OJCPCD). Her faculty research mentor during this research was Richard Wagner, MD, Dermatology Program Director and Professor Dermatology. PGY3 Dermatology Resident Receives Prestigious Thayer Award

Congratulations to Elise Weisert, MD, a current PGY3 UTMB dermatology resident, for receiving the Thayer Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is presented by the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine and “…is given to a resident or fellow who demonstrates sound scientific knowledge, compassion towards patients, and dedication to learning and teaching. Candidates can be nominated by any medical student or faculty…”

Dr. Anthony Linfante Honored by St. Vincent’s Hope Clinic

Congratulations to Anthony Linfante, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Dermatopathology, for receiving the 2024 Beach Award given by St. Vincent’s Hope Clinic in recognition for being outstanding volunteer faculty. He is very active in both the dermatology and rheumatology free clinics for unsponsored patients in Galveston, where he provides supervision for medical student and resident volunteers.

UTMB MS4 Awarded Graduation Dermatology Research Honors

Congratulations to UTMB MS4 Olivia Arriaza for successfully defending her UTMB Dermatology Research Honors Thesis, “Social media misinformation leading to delay in dermatology care and poor outcomes for acne vulgaris patients.” She was awarded magna cum laude graduation dermatology research honors. Her research mentor was Dr. Lindy Ross (Assistant Professor of Dermatology) and ad hoc committee members were Drs. Kathleen Kroger (Assistant Professor of Dermatology), Richard Wagner (Professor Dermatology) and Dr. Jiaren Sun (Professor Microbiology and Immunology).

UTMB Dermatology to Host Visiting Dermatology Resident from Japan

During April 2024, UTMB Dermatology will be hosting Dr. Dr. Kiryu, a PGY2 dermatology resident from Sapporo Japan for a dermatology observership during April 2024. Please welcome him when you meet him in the dermatology clinics!

Dermatology Residency Director Panel 2024 Hosted by USC DIG

The USC Dermatology Interest Group is hosting its 4th Annual Dermatology Residency Director Panel with residency directors from programs across the country, including UCLA, Tulane University, UT Southwestern, University of Pennsylvania, and USC. Last year, we had nearly 1,000 nationwide attendees at the panel!

The event is will take place on Zoom on April 10, 2024, from 4pm-5pm PST. Everyone who RSVPs will receive a link prior to the event.

The goal of the panel is to discuss how to craft a competitive residency application in the midst of recent changes to the dermatology residency process, including adjustments to the token/signaling process, perspectives on research, and the impact of the Pass/Fail USMLE Step 1 format.

We want to hear your questions! Please submit any questions you may have, and we hope the panelists will be able to address them.

UTMB MS3 Accepts Research Year

Congratulations to UTMB MS3 Christopher Thang for his upcoming position as Research Fellow, Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Dermatology for the 2024-2025 academic year. He is the second UTMB medical student in recent years to take a dermatology research position at another institution prior to graduation from UTMB SOM, a growing trend nationally for medical students interested in dermatology residency.

Congratulations Dr. Beard!

The UTMB DIG blog has learned that Dr. Kate Beard (UTMB SOM 2023) matched into a “R” (Resident) dermatology position at West Virginia and will begin training there this July after completing a PGY1 year in family medicine at the same institution. Congratulations!

2024-25 DIG Officer Applications

DIG is opening its 2024-2025 election! Applicants are welcome to apply for more than one position. Application will close on April 10th at 5PM. Paragraphs from each applicant will be sent out by April 12th and voting will occur from April 13-15th. Results will be posted on April 16th.

MS4 Dermatology Post Match Panel

UTMB DIG will be holding a post match panel with this year's matched fourth year medical students on 3/27 at 6 pm.
