UTMB MS4 Publishes in the British Journal of Dermatology

18th Annual Melanoma Walk Raises Over $10,500

 On Sunday May 19th, 2024, the UTMB Dermatology Interest Group, Plastics Reconstructive Surgery Interest Group, and Skin of Color Dermatological Society teamed up with the AIM at Melanoma Foundation to host the 18th Annual Melanoma Walk at the Galveston Seawall. This year we raised over $10,500, marking the largest amount raised since collaborating with AIM! Special thank you to all our sponsors including our presenting sponsor Black Girl Sunscreen, and local sponsors Bayou City Dermatology and Koop’s BBQ kitchen! Thanks to the support of all the participants, volunteers, and fundraisers that helped reach this record-breaking goal.

Graduating MS4 Presents Bilingual Health Track Capstone Project

Congratulations to Quincy Seigel (incoming intern) for presenting her Bilingual Health Track Capstone project "Overview of Current Psoriasis Treatment Research in US Hispanic Populations." Her faculty mentor was Dr. Soham Al Snih, MD, PhD. She will be one of 19 students graduating with the designation of Bilingual Health Scholar from the UTMB JSSOM Class of 2024.

UTMB MS4 Presents Research at Harvard Conference

Diana Bonilla (MS4) presented the research project titled  “Herbal Remedies in Dermatology: How to Address Care Gaps in Latinx Communities” at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital Dermatology Medical Student Virtual Research Symposium.  The abstract was one of the few selected for presentation among 300 submissions. Her co-authors were Antonio Jimenez, MD and Ayezel Munoz, MD.

UTMB MS4 presents at the Annual Southern DIGA Dermatology Spotlight Conference

 Please join DIG in congratulating Melissa Marchan-Martinez, MS4, for presenting her research titled “Hispanic Children with Acanthosis Nigricans Have an Increased Risk of Developing Metabolic Syndrome – A Retrospective Cohort Study” at the Annual Southern DIGA Dermatology Spotlight. Out of 100 abstract submissions, only 21 were accepted for presentation this year. 


Her coauthors are Diana Bonilla, MS (UTMB MS4), Alyssa Hansen, MD, MPH (Dermatology Research Fellow), and Lindy Ross, MD (Principal Investigator and Dermatology Faculty).

2024 Dermatology Interest Group Resident & Faculty Teaching Awards

        
Congratulations to Drs. Timothy "Tim" Tran (PGY4 dermatology resident) and Bernard Gibson (dermatology faculty) for receiving the annual teaching award from the UTMB Dermatology Interest Group (DIG). Each year the current MS4 members of the DIG vote to recognize exceptional mentorship and teaching by a senior resident and faculty member. Thanks to all of UTMB’s dermatology residents and faculty for their excellent teaching throughout the academic year. It truly makes a difference for medical students!

UTMB Mohs Fellow to Present at Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Symposium on Surgical Management of Lentigo Maligna

DIG members are invited to attend Dr. Andrew (“Drew”) Armenta’s Quality Improvement Project and Patient Safety Presentation (“Review of Tumor Margins for Lentigo Maligna with Staged Surgical Excision and Permanent Section en face Processing”) at the annual GME symposium on Wednesday, May 15 from 1 -2 pm on the 4th floor of Jennie Sealy.


His coauthors on this project are UTMB MS3 Michael Adkison and UTMB Mohs faculty Drs. Frank Winsett and Richard Wagner.
