Dermatology Residency Director Panel 2024 Hosted by USC DIG

The USC Dermatology Interest Group is hosting its 4th Annual Dermatology Residency Director Panel with residency directors from programs across the country, including UCLA, Tulane University, UT Southwestern, University of Pennsylvania, and USC. Last year, we had nearly 1,000 nationwide attendees at the panel!
The event is will take place on Zoom on April 10, 2024, from 4pm-5pm PST. Everyone who RSVPs will receive a link prior to the event.
The goal of the panel is to discuss how to craft a competitive residency application in the midst of recent changes to the dermatology residency process, including adjustments to the token/signaling process, perspectives on research, and the impact of the Pass/Fail USMLE Step 1 format.
We want to hear your questions! Please submit any questions you may have, and we hope the panelists will be able to address them.

This panel is open to all medical students from all schools, IMG students, and incoming medical students. We hope to see you all there!



 

UTMB MS4 Defends Dermatology Honors Thesis

Congratulations to UTMB MS4 Olivia Arriaza  Arriaza for her scheduled UTMB Dermatology Honors Research Defense on Monday, April 1 at 2 pm cst. Her research topic is “Social media misinformation leading to delay in dermal care and poor outcomes for acne vulgaris patients” and her faculty mentor is Dr. Lindy Ross, UTMB Assistant Professor of Dermatology. Her ad hoc honors thesis committee members are Drs. Jiaren Sun, Richard Wagner, and Kathleen Kroger. UTMB MS3 Accepts Research Year

Congratulations to UTMB MS3 Christopher Thang for his upcoming position as Research Fellow, Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Dermatology for the 2024-2025 academic year. He is the second UTMB medical student in recent years to take a dermatology research position at another institution prior to graduation from UTMB SOM, a growing trend nationally for medical students interested in dermatology residency.

Congratulations Dr. Beard!

The UTMB DIG blog has learned that Dr. Kate Beard (UTMB SOM 2023) matched into a “R” (Resident) dermatology position at West Virginia and will begin training there this July after completing a PGY1 year in family medicine at the same institution. Congratulations!

2024-25 DIG Officer Applications

DIG is opening its 2024-2025 election! Applicants are welcome to apply for more than one position. Application will close on April 10th at 5PM. Paragraphs from each applicant will be sent out by April 12th and voting will occur from April 13-15th. Results will be posted on April 16th.

UTMB Dermatology Residents Select Dr. Tim Tran for 2024 UTMB Resident of the Year Award

Dr. Tim Tran, a PGY4 dermatology resident at UTMB and the 2023-2024 Chief Resident for Medical Student Education has been nominated for the 2024 UTMB Resident of the Year Award. The UTMB GME Awards Selection Committee only permits one resident from each department to be nominated.  For the past several years, UTMB Dermatology encourages their residents to nominate the departmental representative for this annual institutional honor. Congratulations Dr. Tran!

UTMB Dermatology Residents Place 2nd at 2024 AAD Resident Jeopardy

Texas Dermatology Society (TDS) Conference Spring 2024 in Houston, TX – Registration is now open!

This spring, the annual TDS Meeting will be held on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Houston, TX!

Dr. Armenta Nominated for 2024 UTMB Fellow of the Year Award

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew (“Drew”) Armenta for his nomination from the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Surgery (Mohs) Fellowship for the 2024 UTMB Fellow of the Year Award. Those who have worked with Dr. Armenta during his 9 years at UTMB (medical school, preliminary PGY1 internal medicine, dermatology residency, and Mohs fellowship) can attest to his excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. He will be greatly missed when he moves to Kansas City at the completion of his Mohs Fellowship in June 2024.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities through New DIG Community Service Project

DIG will be offering volunteer opportunities through a new community service project led by Lynchi Nguyen (MS1) and Casey Brusen (MS1): Children Obtaining Dermatologic Education through Bulletin Boards (CODE BB). DIG members will be able to sign-up to volunteer in the near future.

Once a month at several middle schools in Galveston, volunteers can help construct visually engaging bulletin boards for display or lead class presentations regarding the content of the bulletin boards. These boards will utilize creative design to inform students on different dermatology topics every month. Be on the lookout for updates as the 2024-2025 academic year approaches!

Publication in Dermatology Surgery Journal

Congratulations to UTMB PGY-2 dermatology resident, Renat Ahatov, on the publication in Dermatologic Surgery Journal titled "Tarsonemidae Mite Infestation in a Mohs Laboratory." His co-authors are Drs. Juan Pinto-Cuberos (UTMB PGY-3 dermatology resident), Richard Wagner (UTMB dermatology residency program and Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship program director), and Frank Winsett (UTMB faculty and Mohs micrographic surgeon). National Student Research Forum – Call to Faculty and Residents for Judges!

On behalf of the 65th National Student Research Forum (NSRF) organizing committee, we invite ALL faculty and residents as judges in the upcoming forum!The NSRF is an annual event hosted by graduate and medical students at the University of Texas Medical Branch. This forum aims to provide a space for fellow students to showcase their current research in the fields of biomedical sciences, medical humanities, and public health. This year, we are happy to announce that we will be welcoming resident physicians as judges in the forum along with faculty.
