Positive Comments Received from Attendees of UTMB Dermatology Residency Open House

A number of positive remarks were received from MS4 from other institutions who attended the UTMB Open House on Friday, October 22, 2021:

“I wanted to extend my thanks for hosting a wonderful information session last week on your program. I especially enjoyed hearing from your devoted faculty and exceptional residents about the comprehensive curriculum and comradery of your program.”

“I have attended many virtual open houses. Every program says, “we are a family.” Although this may be true, your program SHOWS it. The interactions and rapport you had with one another were unparalleled. Your attitude about training residents, coupled with your passion for serving individuals from all walks of life, would be the perfect recipe for success in my future career. This program provides an opportunity to become an excellent resident, having the ability to graduate with a sense of graduated independence, something I long for in a program.”

COVID-19 and Increased Dermatology Match Rate at Home Programs

The September 2021 issue of Dermatology Online Journal published an interesting letter that found that dermatology applicants had a higher match rate at their home programs during COVID-19 than in previous years (“The impact of COVID-19 on the dermatology match: an increase in the number of students matching at home programs”), see https://escholarship.org/uc/item/8m77413g

Potential explanations for this observation were limited opportunities for away rotations and the use of virtual interviews that may have favored home applicants.

The authors advise in their “Practice Points” that “The implementation of holistic review, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and virtual opportunities might mitigate some of the barriers faced by URM applicants.”
