Dermatology Online Journal (DOJ) Initiates Publication Fees

Dermatology Online Journal (DOJ), a peer-reviewed and PMID indexed dermatology journal, is now charging authors publication fees for accepted articles:

“All articles are subject to a one-time publication fee upon acceptance. A $150 publication fee for all photo vignettes, commentaries, reviews, and letters is required. A $300 publication fee for case reports/series, case presentations, and original articles is required. All fees are payable by credit card at: https://health.ucdavis.edu/dermatology/DOJ.

Please ensure that you have a receipt uploaded demonstrating payment within 14 days of article acceptance, otherwise your article publication could be delayed.”

DIG Meeting Rescheduled Due to St. Vincent's Conflict

The Dermatology Interest Group Fall Kickoff Meeting has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts with St. Vincent's Dermatology Night, which will be held Thursday, September 3rd. We encourage students interested in dermatology to attend St. Vincent's Dermatology Night, so the meeting will now be held Thursday, September 10 at 5 pm.

UTMB Mohs Fellow Dr. Julie Croley Publishes About Z-Plasty Applications for Skin Flap Surgery

Congratulations to Dr. J. Croley, a former UTMB PGY4 dermatology resident and the current UTMB Mohs Fellow for the 2020-2021 academic year for her case report, “Z-plasty for Correction of Standing Cutaneous Deformity” in the peer-reviewed journal, Cutis (2020; 106:80-81). Her co-authors were Drs. Ross Tanis, Josh Hammel (UTMB Mohs Fellow for 2018-2019 currently in private Mohs practice, Atlanta, Georgia), and Richard Wagner (Professor Dermatology and UTMB Mohs Fellowship Director). Dermatology Shelf Exam Suggested for Medical Students

Author Aamir Hussain, a dermatology resident at MedStar Washington Hospital Center (Washington, DC), has suggested that that the creation of a dermatology shelf exam would add valuable information for programs when selecting dermatology residents. This article, “The Need for a Dermatology Shelf Exam” was published in The Dermatologist, July 2020, Volume 28, Number 7, pages 38-39.

A Children's House for the Soul

Virtual Dermatology Experience at University of New Mexico

University of New Mexico Dermatology will be hosting virtual dermatology experiences. This experience is problem-oriented in approach and emphasizes the diagnosis and treatment of the most common skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Students accepted to participate will acquire some proficiency in the rapid diagnosis and basic treatment of the most important diseases of the skin. Students are expected to actively participate during the sessions. 

Students are expected to attend a one-hour cases session with a Dermatology faculty member at 10 AM MST each Monday to Friday. Topics will cover: general and complex medical dermatology, cutaneous oncology, and pediatric dermatology. Each case session incorporates 10 minutes of lecture and 50 minutes of cases. On the last day of the session, students will give a 5-minute presentation on a topic of their choice.

1. 9/14/2020-9/25/2020
2. 9/28/2020-10/9/2020

Time: 10 AM-11 AM MST

Application materials required:
- Statement of interest (500 word max). Please include any connection to UNM, Albuquerque, New Mexico, or the Southwest. 
- Ranking of your session preference (#1, #2, no preference)
- CV
- Step 1 scores (Minimum 225 preferred, but applications will be holistically reviewed); you may include this in your CV
- Photo (optional for application but required if you are accepted) 


Texas Dermatological Society 2020 Fall Meeting Goes Virtual

This year's Texas Dermatological Society Fall Meeting will be held virtually on September 25-26. Residents, Fellows & Medical Students will have the opportunity to present their abstracts and research in two different settings.

Applications for the podium and poster competitions are to be filled online.

Virtual Podium Competition: Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the amounts of $500, $300 and $200 as well as certificates.

REMINDER: Residents are only eligible to win. Medical Students & Fellows are welcome to participate.
